FAQ

General

What is The Nourished Patient?
The Nourished Patient is a specialized meal delivery service designed for surgical recovery. Our meals evolve with each stage of healing so you get the right nutrition when your body needs it most.

How does this service help my recovery?
Our meals are high in protein, low in sodium to help reduce swelling, and packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients. We focus first on hydration and gentle digestion, then gradually layer in adaptogens and nutrient complexity—making recovery smoother, faster, and more comfortable.

Program Start & Structure

When do meals begin after surgery?
Your program begins the day of surgery with a tailored protocol, since most patients are fasting beforehand. Recovery at home starts with a Hydrating Recovery Tonic—often consisting of ingredients like coconut water, aloe, zinc, vitamin c, or liposomal glutathione—the goal is to help flush anesthesia and restore balance. Some patients choose to bring this tonic with them, or have their pickup person provide it, so they can begin sipping as soon as they’re discharged.

Dinner that evening is a Light Broth-Based Soup with gentle protein and a simple carb to settle the stomach and provide nourishment without straining digestion. The night closes with a second Recovery Tonic to support hydration and rest.

From the following morning (Day 1), your structured recovery plan begins, gradually building in nutrients and complexity each week.

Do you include adaptogens or supplements?
Yes, but never on Day 0. Adaptogens are carefully introduced starting in Week 2, once the body is stable, to support energy, mood, and deeper healing.

Meal Programs

What types of meals will I receive?
Meals are nutrient-dense, protein-rich (35–45g per meal), gluten- and dairy-free, and made with clean, organic ingredients. Early meals are steamed and gentle on digestion, while later meals use high-quality fats like avocado oil, grass-fed ghee, or beef tallow as your body is ready.

Can you accommodate dietary needs?
All of our meal programs are already free of dairy and gluten. If you have additional dietary restrictions, we offer our Premier Option, which allows significant customization for food sensitivities and/or special requirements. Contact us before enrolling and we’ll work closely with you to create a program that fits your needs.

What if I’ve had oral or facial surgery?
We provide texture-modified meals and nutrient-rich liquids that adapt to your healing phases. From sip-friendly tonics and purées to progressively thicker meals, we ensure you get the nutrition you need comfortably.

Do you offer dental-specific recovery plans?
Yes. Our Dental Recovery Plans include puréed and liquid meals that are easy to consume and packed with nutrients. We offer 5- and 7-day options, and a specialized 6-week option for those recovering from orthognathic surgery.

Do you offer travel support?
Yes. Our Travel-Ready Recovery Kits include frozen TSA-compliant meals or DIY plans with pre-portioned ingredients and grocery guides, so you can recover confidently abroad.

Add-On Services

What is the Nutrition Recovery Consult?
A 30-minute session with our Registered Dietitian to review your recovery goals, optimize your plan, and address any sensitivities.

What is the Nurse Practitioner Recovery Consult?
A 30-minute session providing a detailed look at your medications, supplement interactions, and lifestyle recommendations to support safe healing.

Delivery & Safety

How are meals delivered?
Meals are prepared in certified kitchens and shipped in temperature-controlled packaging. They arrive fresh or frozen, safe, and ready to eat.

How should I reheat meals?
We recommend reheating on the stovetop—bring to a gentle boil, then allow to cool before eating. If you’re recovering alone and need to use a microwave, transfer to a microwave-safe bowl, heat on high, and allow it to cool before consuming.

Do you ship nationwide?
Yes. We ship across the continental U.S. using insulated, ice-packed boxes that keep meals safe and fresh for delivery.

What safety measures do you follow?
We adhere to strict food safety protocols, with certified kitchens and regular quality checks to ensure every meal meets the highest standard.

Program Details

How long does a program last?
Our programs typically cover 5–10 days, with extended options up to 6 weeks for patients needing longer recovery support.

How much protein will I get each day?
Our programs are designed to provide 120–150 grams of protein daily, following recovery guidelines for wound healing and tissue repair. If you’ve had a consult with our Registered Dietitian or Nurse Practitioner, your protein intake may be adjusted based on your BMI and individual recovery needs.

What makes The Nourished Patient different?
We don’t just deliver food—we deliver a system. Meals change week by week to match the phases of healing: from gentle broths and steamed vegetables in the early days to adaptogen-rich meals later on. Every detail is designed to reduce swelling, support digestion, and help your body heal effectively.

Do insurance or HSA/FSA accounts cover this?
Not yet, but we hope to be able to offer those options in the near future.

Is there customer support if I need help?
